And recently my grandmother’s “selection of life hacks” caught my eye. It turns out that many housewives of that time can be applied by modern housewives. For example, put onions in the freezer.
Why put onions in the freezer?
Everyone who chopped onions at least once could notice that this process is associated with a certain discomfort. Soon, the nose begins to treacherously pinch, pain appears in the eyes, they are filled with tears. To finish the job, you have to put up with pain. At such moments, it’s very easy to cut your fingers.
Freezing onions solves the problem of lacrimation and pain in the eyes.
For the council to work, it is not necessary to freeze the onion to a solid state. She is put in the freezer for literally 10-15 minutes. After that, the vegetable is calmly peeled and cut. He does not cause tears.
Does it work?
Before I knew how to freeze onions, I fought onion tears by wetting the knife with cold water. It helped for a while. I had to be distracted every 1-2 minutes and rinse the blade again. Therefore, I decided to try life hack from the tenderloin.
It turned out that the method really works. The onion is cleaned and cut without any discomfort. Importantly, a brief freeze does not affect the taste and structure of the onion. It is perfectly fried, becomes golden. You can safely add this onion to cutlets. They come out as juicy and delicious as with fresh onions.
Freezing onions - why?
It does not make sense to freeze onions for storage. I have a bag of onions on the balcony for six months, if not longer.
But there are situations when freezing really helps out:
- For quick cooking. Sometimes I chop too much onion. To throw out the excess is a pity. So I wrap the sliced bag and put it in the freezer. If the onion is not thawed, but immediately spread on a preheated pan, it turns out to be tasty and golden. I use it in cooking roasts, fry with minced meat, mushrooms, prepare sauces.
- For cooking delicious onion rings. I learned the main secret of cooking this dish from a friend of the cook. It turns out that onion rings must be frozen before deep-frying. After that, they do not creep, they get a perfect round shape, fragrant and crispy.
Onion Rings Recipe
Onion rings are a tasty and simple appetizer. It is perfect for beer. I also really like white wine rings with cheese.
To prepare snacks you will need:
- medium and large onions - 0.5 kg;
- mozzarella cheese - 100 g;
- chicken eggs - 2-3 pcs.;
- flour - 150 g;
- breadcrumbs - 150 g;
- vegetable oil - 300 ml.
Recipe:
- Put the unpeeled onions in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- Clean it, wash it.
- Cut into circles 1.5 cm thick.
- Disassemble into rings. Put the smallest ones aside immediately.
- Cut mozzarella into long, thin strips 1.5 cm thick.
- Wrap the onion ring in a strip of cheese and insert it into a larger onion ring.
- Insert cheese into all pairs of rings.
- Freeze the onion on a plate and detect for 1 hour.
- By this time, prepare 3 plates with egg mass, flour and breadcrumbs. Heat a frying pan or deep-frying pan with oil.
- Roll the frozen rings in flour, then in the egg, again in the flour, in the egg and at the very end - in breadcrumbs.
- Fry until golden and lay on a paper napkin. It absorbs excess oil.
The remaining small onion rings can be used to make a creamy sauce. Bring 200 ml of cream to a boil, add lightly fried finely chopped onions, 50 g each of grated Parmesan and mozzarella, salt, nutmeg, paprika and white pepper to taste. Stir and remove the sauce from the heat.
Onions can be put in the freezer for different purposes - to freeze slices, onion rings. But more often it is put there to neutralize caustic juice. After 15 minutes, the bulb can be easily cut without shedding tears.
